• Google is developing a new Large Language Model (LLM) called Google Gemini.
  • This LLM is developed by Google Deepmind – the AI development division of Google.
  • Google has been developing Gemini to directly rival the likes of OpenAI.

Back at the Google I/O Conference that took place in May 2023, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the development of Gemini, a new AI system. This will be developed by Google Deepmind – the team developing various AI systems.

Google Gemini is an LLM (Large Language Model) that will be similar to the likes of their Google Bard AI chatbot. However, Gemini will have a more broader range of functions since it combines Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo system – which has extensive language modeling functionalities.

Google Gemini will be a multimodal LLM since it will be able to integrate lots of elements like texts, images, and various other types of data. This allows for more “human-like” conversational abilities, which do not sound robotic like the answers of Open AI’s ChatGPT, Google Bard, and BingChat.

Regarding its capabilities, Google’s Chief Scientist Jeffrey Dean has commented that it’s a “Next-Generational Multimodal AI Model” since it can be used in multiple ways, not just as a conversational tool.

It will also be able to make use of Pathways, a new infrastructure by Google that allows developers to scale up the training of AI models drastically. Therefore, we expect Google Gemini to cross the limitations of GPT-4 with more than 175 billion parameters.

Such a large number of parameters will give Gemini higher logical and reasoning skills for problem-solving. Since it’s a series of various AI models, users will be able to use different parts of it exclusively.

Sundar Pichai has also stated that Google Gemini will be developed in a way that makes it the personal assistant of people, making it an integral part of their daily lives (much like what Google Search has become now).

Google Gemini will officially come out next year, and we are all stoked to see how well it performs.
