While most experts believe that Elon Musk is running X (Twitter) to the ground, the EU is taking advantage of this fact as well. Therefore, the EU has decided to give Elon Musk and X a 24-hour ultimatum regarding the spread of misinformation related to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
In a tweet (in X) made on October 10, EU Commissioner Thierry Breton stated that he and his platform are obligated to follow the new Digital Services Act charted by the EU.
As per this act, no social media platform should tolerate the spread of misinformation on their respective platforms. Therefore, the dissemination of illegal content and misinformation should be taken note of, followed by taking action against them.
However, the EU commissioner has found that a lot of misinformation was spread regarding the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Breton stated that over 50 million posts were made on X in under three days regarding this situation. He also made a long tweet regarding it as well:
Below Breton’s post, Elon commented in his own way. This is the response of Elon:
“Our policy is that everything is open source and transparent, an approach that I know the EU supports. We take our actions in the open. No back room deals. Please post your concerns explicitly on this platform.”
Let’s wait and see how this back-and-forth commenting will go from here on out!
