While Google Doodles typically stay on our homepages for 24 to 48 hours at the most, some doodles should definitely check out long after they drop from their prime spots! Google Dreidel is one such festive doodle we love. Recently, we also came across another doodle from a few years back – Google Garden Gnomes!
Yep! Google Doodle’s game featuring garden gnomes in honor of Germany’s Garden Day is addictive, fun, and super easy! In fact, I was pretty addicted to the game last weekend – so much so that my productivity was at risk on Monday morning.
I think it’s really cute of Google to pay attention to gnomes, quirky little mythical figures who are very real in Harry Potter’s world. What better than featuring these cute figurines in an interactive and addictive game?
The game’s purpose is simple – to use a catapult and launch gnomes made from clay far into the garden. As per Google, “the farther your gnome travels the more flowers you plant — and the more points you earn!”
Now, that does sound easy, but there are some tricks you can master and rack up points with ease! And I’m here to help – so, stick around while I lay down the path to mastering Google Garden Gnomes!
So, let’s check out 5 tricks that can help you with the Google Garden Gnomes game with ease:
Once you start playing the game, you will have to use your keyboard and keep pressing the spacebar for moving the catapult. Also, for launching a gnome you will have to press the spacebar again.
So, while pressing the spacebar multiple times, ensure that you are not pressing the same too fast. Otherwise, you will drop the gnome early. Now, if you drop the gnome early, it will either fall in front of the catapult or behind it.
As a result, you need the right combination of height and speed to send your gnome flying across the garden. For this, hit the spacebar after the curve’s apex and launch the gnome – this gets better once you play the game a few times.
This one’s pretty interesting – you can make the most of strategic bouncing! Yes – the game allows players to bounce gnomes right off the ground. For this, you have to press the space bar once more to make the gnome bounce.
In this case, the strategy lies in making your gnome bounce off objects like mushrooms and logs to make it travel far across the ground after bouncing.
Eventually, you will get the option to play with different types of gnomes. I started playing with one type of gnome initially. However, soon I got the option to try several other types. Now, this is where the strategy comes into play!
You can play with different weights and shapes to ensure that your gnome sails far across the garden. So, if you ask for my personal opinion, I liked this big gnome that I got towards the end.
So, I have not tried out this strategy yet but as per CNET, it is possible to get some additional distance, thanks to the extra bounce feature! Apparently, there is a down-arrow button located at the bottom right side of the screen right before the gnome can touch the ground – sounds interesting, right?
You should definitely try this strategy out for some additional luck!
This is the golden rule for anything literally – and not just Google Garden Gnomes! The more you practice launching gnomes across the garden, the better you are going to get at this game.
Moreover, you will get an idea of when to throw the gnomes, when to make the gnome bounce, and more importantly, when to press the space bar. So, if you can just stick to it, you will master this game easily – and not even take much time!
While launching Google Garden Gnomes in June 2018, the search engine giant had written:
“Look amongst the greenery of Germany’s lush gardens and you might spot a red-capped gartenzwerg, or garden gnome. Today’s Doodle – just in time for Garden Day in Germany – celebrates these tiny statues for their big role in German history.
Gnome figures first appeared in 13th-century Anatolia and re-emerged in 16th-century Italy. The common garden gnome originated in 19th-century Germany from the mining area of Thuringia. Here, local craftsmen are given credit for hand-crafting the gnomes as we know them—with shaggy beards and pointy hats.
Propelled by local myths and increased leisure time, the gnomes began to find homes in gardens throughout the country. Legend has it they protect these gardens and bring good luck.
In today’s interactive Doodle, you’ll learn a bit more about how the humble gnome is made. Then, you’ll enlist a group of gnomes to help you decorate a garden of your own!
Here’s how the game works: Use your trusty catapult (or trebuchet to be precise) to launch your clay gnomes into the farthest reaches of your garden. The farther your gnome travels, the more flowers you plant—and the more points you earn! Once you learn the basics, you can choose from six colorful gnomes with different shapes, weights, and bounciness. Try each one to see which gnome goes the greatest distance towards making your garden the most beautiful of all.”

We loved how at the end of Google Garden Gnomes, players get the option to share their results on social media. Apart from sharing results on social media with the help of the ‘share’ option, you can also use the ‘search’ option to read up on the “history of garden gnomes.”
